Notre Dame came into this game trying to rebound from a disappointing loss to Arizona State, while Northwestern wanted to get back on track after a terrible loss to Michigan.
The game was hard-fought throughout, but the No. 18 Irish looked like they finally had the game in hand after they went up 40-29 in the fourth quarter. However, the Wildcats scored 11 points in the last four minutes to force overtime.
Notre Dame got the ball first and missed a field goal to start overtime, leaving the door open for Northwestern to grab the win. They settled for a field goal of their own, which they were able to kick through the uprights for the victory.
Running back Justin Jackson had a big game for the Wildcats, rushing for 149 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.
Wide receiver William Fuller did all he could for the Irish, catching nine passes for 159 yards and all three of quarterback Everett Golson's touchdown passes.
Northwestern looked like a different team this week, as this offensive explosion comes on the heels of a nine point performance against a bad Michigan team.
The loss marks Notre Dame's first home defeat of the season.
The Irish will try and snap their two-game losing streak against Louisville next weekend, while Northwestern travels to face Purdue.
