The New York Yankees are diving headfirst into what'll be a pivotal offseason for the franchise, and there's plenty of rumors to be had both from the trade and free agency markets. Here's the latest news & rumors you need to know:
Yankees to make a run at Mike Trout?
There have been reports over the past year with speculation that the Los Angeles Angels may decide to trade All-Star Mike Trout. If they're open to dealing Trout, the Yankees could make a serious run at him, according to WFAN's Sweeny Murti:
The basis of it comes from the big restock the Yankees pulled off with the Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller deals last July, on top of what had already become one of the more talent-rich systems in the game. The Yankees now had “an army of prospects,” according to this scout.
“You don’t accumulate all those prospects with the intent of keeping them all,” the scout told me. “They have value and it makes complete sense to spin off four of five of them for Trout.”
Trading prospects for the biggest star in the game?
“It’s very much a Yankees kind of move and makes too much sense for them,” he told me.
Trout batted .315 with 29 home runs and 100 RBIs in 159 games this season.
New York willing to trade Brett Gardner, Chase Headley
Brian McCann's name has been mentioned in several trade rumors already this offseason, but Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Yankees are also open to dealing Brett Gardner and Chase Headley:
McCann and outfielder Brett Gardner are considered the most available Yankees in trade, but the team also is open to moving third baseman Chase Headley, sources say. Headley, owed $13 million in each of the next two seasons, batted .178 with a .442 OPS through May 11 last season, then recovered to hit .270 with a .779 OPS the rest of the way.
