The New York Yankees have already been active on the trade market, acquiring Todd Frazier, David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle from the Chicago White Sox last night. However, they are still exploring several other moves - particularly ones that could land them a top-tier starting pitcher. Here are three possible trades they could make:
1) Do whatever it takes to land Sonny Gray
New York has had their eye on upgrading their rotation since the start of the season, and following the trade that sent Jose Quintana to the Cubs, Gray is now the best starting pitcher available on the open market. Oakland has all but guaranteed that he will be dealt. As such, pretty much every contender is interested in acquiring him, which means New York will have to part with several of their top prospects to land him.
For Gray, it makes sense. Gray has two more years of arbitration before becoming an unrestricted free agent following the 2019 season. Yu Darvish could also be available, but with his contract up after the season and it doesn't make sense for New York to part with future assets for a rental.
Gray is 5-4 with a 3.74 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 15 starts this season.
2) Trade prospect, Brett Gardner for Yonder Alonso
Alonso is in the middle of a breakout season and Oakland is looking to flip him when his stock is the highest. The Yankees are interested in him, hoping he can add another power at to their lineup. There hasn't been a whole lot of interest from other teams since many don't need a power bat - which means New York could get him for relatively cheap.
Alonso is batting .270 with 21 home runs and 44 RBIs in 85 games so far this season.

3) Trade two low-level prospects for Lucas Duda
The New York Mets are openly shopping several players on their roster, and the Yankees have had discussions with them about acquiring first baseman Lucas Duda. The Yankees are interested in him for the same reasons they're interested in Alonso, meaning they'll likely go after whoever they can get for the cheapest. Duda is in the last year of his contract, so the Mets may be willing to let him go just to get something small in return for him.
He is batting .244 with 16 home runs and 34 RBIs in 67 games this season.
