Steven Matz didn’t have one favorite player growing up on Long Island as a Mets fan.
“Man, my favorite player was always changing,” Matz said Friday night at Citi Field, a day before he was scheduled to start Game 4 of the World Series against the Royals following the Mets 9-3 win in Game 3. “I loved Johan [Santana]. I loved Mike Piazza. I remember Endy Chavez making that catch in 2006 and then the World Series, obviously, in 2000. The Subway Series was a lot of fun to watch.”
The rookie left-hander will look to add his own name to team lore when he tries to even the World Series against Kansas City just over four months after making his MLB debut against the Reds.
