The New York Knicks are looking to upgrade the point guard position after receiving inconsistent play from Jose Calderon and rookie Jerian Grant, and they could make a move before the trade deadline. Marc Berman of the New York Post notes that Detroit's Brandon Jennings could be available, and expects New York to explore trade talks with the Pistons:
One point guard available now is Detroit’s backup Brandon Jennings. He’s returning from an Achilles tear and could make his season debut this month. Sources indicated most teams would wait until Jennings plays a few games because of the nastiness of Achilles injuries.
The Pistons have their new starting point guard in Reggie Jackson, and Jennings is in the last year of a three-year, $24 million deal. Trading the pact of Calderon, a former Piston, for Jennings straight up wouldn’t do the trick, but adding Grant or a big man to a package could be more enticing.
The Knicks will also try to unload some of their big men, as their rotation has become crowded with the emergence of rookie Kristaps Porzingis. Him and center Robin Lopez won't be dealt, but everyone else could be on the table. Grant, other rookies, and offseason free-agent signings aren't eligible to be traded until Tuesday.
If New York doesn't acquire a point guard before the trade deadline, they're certain to sign one in free agency this summer. Both Memphis' Mike Conley and Sacramento's Rajon Rondo headline the point guard class.
