NBA Free Agency is underway and although the New York Knicks are set to rebuild, they're still targeting a few notable free agents. Point guard is their main focus, with one player in particular emerging as the top target. Here are all the latest Knicks rumors and news you need to know.
Knicks Want George Hill
The Knicks are looking for point guard help and that's led them to George Hill. He's set to leave the Utah Jazz and the Knicks have made him their top target, per Ian Begley of ESPN.
"In the days leading up to free agency, members of the New York Knicks' front office told people that their priorities were to find a veteran point guard to help groom rookie Frank Ntilikina and to put together a younger roster without overspending on free agents," Begley writes. "To that end, they've been trying in recent days to unload some salary to make a competitive offer to a veteran point guard. According to sources, their top target at the moment is Utah Jazz free agent George Hill. New York made its interest in Hill previously known but didn't reach out to the 31-year-old in the early hours of free agency, per sources. (Sources say the Denver Nuggets were among the teams to reach out to Hill.)"
Hill could command a hefty contract, which is why the Jazz traded for Ricky Rubio. If Hill ends up out of New York's price range, Derrick Rose remains an option for the Knicks. ESPN reports the Knicks have contacted him and Rose is interested in a return.
Knicks Shopping Courtney Lee And Carmelo
The Knicks are also looking to shed some salary and two names have emerged as trade bait: Courtney Lee and Carmelo Anthony.
"One option for the Knicks when it comes to shedding salary is trading Courtney Lee," Begley writes in that same piece. "Another option? Trading Carmelo Anthony. To that end, the Knicks and Houston Rockets touched base recently on a trade involving Anthony, per league sources, but talks didn't gain much traction. One name that came up in discussions was Ryan Anderson, per sources. But the Knicks said at that time they weren't interested in Anderson, who has been shopped around by the Rockets."
Anderson has a hefty contract, so dealing Anthony for him doesn't solve the Knicks cap space issue they're trying to get out of by dealing Anthony. The Knicks want to trade Anthony and avoid a buy-out, but they might not be able to pull that off.
