Most NBA mock draft have the New York Knicks taking a point guard with the No. 8 overall pick. But the latest rumor pegs another name in the mix: Duke shooting guard Luke Kennard.
ESPN Insider (subscription required) Chad Ford mocked Malik Monk to the Knicks in his latest mock draft, but says Kennard is getting interest from the Knicks.
"Kennard wowed NBA scouts and GMs at his pro day, putting on an epic 3-point display and showing more athleticism than scouts thought he had a Duke (the Lakers recorded him with a 38.5-inch max vertical at his workout)," Ford, who had Kennard going No. 12 to the Pistons, writes. "Kennard is getting interest as high as No. 8 to the Knicks. He's a hot name to watch right now."
Given the plethora of quality point guard options (five, if counting Monk), it'd be a major surprise for the Knicks to take Kennard. There's no doubt he's a gifted shooter after putting up 19.5 points per game and shooting 43.8 percent from 3-point range. And while teams always need shooters, Kennard isn't a great defender. Plus, the Knicks badly need point guard help and it just so happens there are better prospects at that position.
One other thing to watch out for: the Knicks have expressed interest in moving back into the first round. If they're able to pull that off and Kennard falls to them (wherever that potential pick could be), then drafting Kennard makes more sense.
