The New York Knicks plan to aim big in free agency again this offseason in hopes of luring another star to play alongside Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. They're going to do what they can to be in the mix for Kevin Durant, the prize of the free agency class, but there are several other big names New York has their eyes on. Here are 4 players the Knicks should target this summer:
4) DeMar DeRozan
DeRozan is in a good situation in Toronto, but the Southern California native may look elsewhere for employment to cash in. The hometown Lakers appear to be the favorite to take him away from Toronto is he does leave, but he also loves the appeal of playing in New York. At the least, both sides will hit the negotiation tables to hear each other out.
3) Hassan Whiteside
Whiteside is also guaranteed to be playing for someone other than Miami next year since they can't afford the massive pay increase he's going to receive on the open market, making him a perfect prospect for New York. The Knicks have plenty of cap space, and Whiteside could be the dominant defensive center they need to pair with Porzingis. There would be questions as to how the two would fit offensively, but there's no denying they'd become one of the most menacing front lines in the league.
2) Harrison Barnes
Barnes wants more money than what Golden State seems willing to offer him, and as they start their own pursuit of Kevin Durant, they may been willing to let Barnes walk. As someone who has always been very concerned about their personal "brand", Barnes will be intrigued by playing with an expanded role in the media capital in the world.
Adding him would slide Anthony to power forward and Porzingis to center permanently, though that has been very successful for the Knicks this year. Plus, he would bring much-needed championship experience.
1) Mike Conley
Conley has been linked to New York for the past two years now, and he is priority No. 1 for the Knicks. It seems like a foregone conclusion that Conley will depart the aging and diminished Grizzlies, and New York is prepared to throw a ton of money at him to fill their desperate need for a point guard.
