In a surprise move, the New York Jets have traded for quarterback Tim Tebow, formerly of the Denver Broncos. Yes, that Tim Tebow. The Jets will get Tebow plus a 7th round pick, the Broncos will get a 4th round pick and 7th round pick from the Jets.

This deal would have been completed 9 hours ago at around noon, but a contract technicality held it up. Tebow was paid a $6.2 salary advance by the Broncos. $1.2 million was paid out last season, and the Broncos wanted the Jets to pick up the other $5 million.
The trade was finally completed when the Jets agreed to pick up half the tab, about $2.5 million.
Tebow started 11 games last season, throwing for 1,729 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions for a passer rating of 72.9. He completed 126 of his 271 passes, which is a completion percentage of 46.5%.

The timing of this trade is baffling, since the Jets gave quarterback Mark Sanchez a three year extension barely two weeks ago. It’s unclear at this point exactly what role Tebow is going to play in the Jets offense. While he’d do the most good as a running back or tight end, he has stated he wants to be a quarterback.
