The New York Giants have released wide receiver Victor Cruz, according to multiple reports.
Cruz had said recently that he wanted to return to the Giants in 2017, but knew he may have to take a pay cut to do so. He was going to count $9.4 million against the cap next season, and by releasing him, New York creates $7.5 million in cap space.
He has played his entire seven-year career with the Giants, but lost two seasons to injuries. He suffered a torn patella tendon six games into the 2014 season, then missed all of 2015 due to lingering issues with that injury, along with suffering a calf injury that required surgery.
New York moved Cruz back to a slot role this season, but rookie Sterling Shepard overtook the job as the season progressed.
Cruz caught 39 passes for 586 yards and a touchdown last season, but only had 15 catches over the final nine games of the season.
