The New York Giants have used their franchise tag on defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, according to ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio.
Two years ago, the Giants applied the franchise tag to defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. They’ve done it again.
Per a league source, the Giants have slapped the franchise tag onto a player who recovered from a fireworks mishaps that disfigured his right hand to have a very strong 2016 season.
It’s the non-exclusive tag, and it entitles Pierre-Paul to a one-year tender worth 10.14 percent of the total salary cap. At $166 million (the number isn’t finalized yet), that would be $16.83 million.
JPP signed a one-year deal with the Giants last offseason to stay with the team, and he is now seeking a multi-year deal. The sides are still able to negotiate a long-term deal until he signs the tender.
The non-exclusive tag does allow Pierre-Paul to negotiate with other teams, but signing him will cost teams two first-round picks.
Last year, Jason Pierre-Paul had 53 tackles with seven sacks and three forced fumbles. He has spent his entire seven-year career with the Giants.
