Each year, several veterans end up getting cut or traded by their teams before the start of the regular season. That will likely be the case this year for New York Giants. The Giants missed the playoffs last year and are hoping the promotion of Ben McAdoo will help turn things around. In order to do that, New York could turn to younger players over veterans once roster cuts begin.
There are a few veterans who might end up not being on the New York roster at the start of the season. That could come via a trade, or more likely, a release. With that in mind, here are three veterans who are on the bubble to make the NY Giants' roster.
RB Andre Williams
Williams has only been in the league for three seasons, so he's a little young to truly be considered a veteran. But we're counting him anyway, because his job is in serious jeopardy. Rashad Jennings is still the starter, Shane Vereen is the third down back and the Giants drafted Paul Perkins this year. Throw in the presence of Bobby Rainey and Orleans Darkwa, and it's clear Williams has an uphill battle to make the roster. After posting an awful 2.9 yards per carry average last year, it might be time for the Giants to part ways with Williams.
OT Byron Stingily
The Giants added Stingily this offseason, but there's no guarantee he makes the roster. He'll likely fight for the swing tackle role behind Ereck Flowers and Marshall Newhouse. But Bobby Hart is the early favorite for that role, and don't overlook Jake Rodgers, a 2015 seventh round pick by the Falcons, either. Stingily will have to fight for his job, putting him firmly on the roster bubble.
S Cooper Taylor
Taylor was a 2013 pick, but we're still going to include him. He played sparingly last season and the Giants might not need him this year. Landon Collins, Nat Berhe, Darian Thompson and Mykkele Thompson should all make the roster before Taylor. We can include Bennett Jackson if he plays both CB and safety this year. That would leave Taylor as the odd man out, since it's tough to see the Giants carrying five safeties, barring injuries.
