Season Recap
San Antonio rebounded from perhaps the worst Finals loss ever only to return this year and absolutely steamroll the very same Miami Heat team that beat them a year ago. It was the most dominant championship performance in NBA history, and Tony Parker has said that he expects everyone - including Tim Duncan and coach Gregg Popovich - to come back next season.
If that's the case, the Spurs essentially have no holes to fill, as they're sitting on top of the basketball world. However, with an aging roster and the franchise only a few years away from practically having a whole new team, youth and depth are needed.
Who will San Antonio pick to help build the future Spurs?
Draft Picks
Round 1
Pick 30
There normally aren't many good options this late in the draft, but in a class that's this loaded, the chances are actually pretty high they'll find someone who can have a decent NBA career.
The Spurs have been looking for someone to add to their big man rotation of Duncan, Tiago Splitter, and Boris Diaw since they know Duncan and Diaw only have a few more years left. I think they'll look at Mitch McGary from Michigan, who would've been a lottery pick in last year's draft. He's an average scorer but a solid rebounder and great passer for a big man who stays within himself. Popovich's offensive system would work well with McGary's strengths, making him a good fit to provide some minutes off the bench.
If McGary's off the board, Tennessee's Jarnell Stokes, a physical rebounder, will be available. San Antonio also loves to "draft-and-stash" foreign players and keep them overseas for a few years while they develop, and they could do this with center Walter Tavares from Cape Verde.
Round Two
Pick 28 (58th overall)
With two of the last three picks in the draft, the Spurs essentially get the scraps of what's left. They really like Virginia's Joe Harris - a great defender, team-first guy, and underrated scorer - if he's still available, but could also go with Markel Brown from Oklahoma State to get more athletic on the perimeter. Another option, depending on what they do with their first round pick, would be to draft-and-stash center Mousse Diagne from Senegal.
Pick 30 (60th overall)
If they can get two of the three players mentioned above, the Spurs won't hesitate. If all three are gone at the end of the draft, look for them to pick Jordan Bachynski, a tall shot-blocking center from Arizona State.
