Royals Trade Rumors: Marlins Interested In Edinson Volquez, Kansas City Dealing Lorenzo Cain?

The MLB trade deadline is just one day away and the Kansas City Royals trade rumors are starting to heat up. The Royals are just 49-54, meaning all options are on the table with this squad. With that in mind, here all the latest Royals trade rumors you need to know.

Royals dealing Cain?
It seems almost blasphemous that the Royals would entertain the notion of trading one of their stars in Lorenzo Cain, but they appear to be doing just that. According to Jeff Todd of MLBTradeRumors, several teams have talked to Kansas City about the possibility of acquiring Cain:

To be sure, the odds of the Royals dealing Lorenzo Cain were always slight — even if the team is open to listening on him. But a hamstring injury and month-long layoff seemed to all but eliminate the already-feeble chances of a trade. Now Cain is back from the DL, and ready to get back to work at making this season’s batting line (.288/.338/.413) look more like that from 2015 (.307/.361/.477). It still seems that an offseason deal — if any — is more likely, but there’s no question that contenders would have serious interest in a player who has established himself as one of the game’s better all-around players in recent years.

Cain is under contract through the 2017 season, but the Royals are already worried they won't be able to afford to re-sign him. As such, trading him is an option to ensure you get something in return for him.

The 30-year-old is batting .284 with eight homers and 39 RBIs in 75 games this season.

Marlins getting Volquez?
The Royals have put pitcher Edinson Volquez on the trade block, and while several teams have inquired about him, the Miami Marlins have shown the most interest in him. According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, he's one of three pitchers they're looking at

The Marlins are determined to add at least one starting pitcher, and two ideally, before Monday’s trade deadline, and we're told these are three new names in whom they’ve expressed interest: Kansas City’s Edinson Volquez (8-8, 4.56 ERA, has a $10 million mutual option next season), the Angels’ Matt Shoemaker (5-11, 4.17, under team control through 2020), and Atlanta’s Julio Teheran (3-8, 2.71, due $6.3, $8 million, $11 million through 2019).

Shoemaker hasn't quite been the same since going 16-4 and finishing second in American League Rookie of the Year balloting in 2014. But he still has upside and the Angels are said to be listening to offers. He generally has pitched well since May, though he allowed five runs in his last start.

MLB.com reported that it's unlikely the Braves will trade Teheran because he's signed to a longterm affordable contract.

That leaves Volquez as the most attainable player of that group, so look for a deal to be done between the two sides before tomorrow's deadline.
