The Kansas City Royals' acquisition of Cincinnati Reds ace Johnny Cueto gives them a front-of-the-line starter for their playoff push from August on, but there was reportedly another ace on their minds prior to consummating the deal for Cueto.
Per Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star, the Royals put out feelers to the Detroit Tigers regarding David Price but were rebuffed:
KC expressed interest in David Price last week, but found Detroit wasn't ready to deal. So the Royals jumped on Johnny Cueto, instead.

Price, of course, ended up being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays this week after the Tigers' front office ostensibly waved the white flag and signed off a potential fire sale with the team hanging by a thread in both the AL Central and AL Wild Card races.
Cueto isn't a bad consolation prize to have. In fact, acquiring the 2014 runner-up for the NL Cy Young Award really can't be considered a consolation at all. In 2015, the 29-year-old righty is 7-6 with a sterling 2.62 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 120 strikeouts in 130.2 innings pitched.
