The Kansas City Royals have reportedly doubled down in their efforts to re-sign free agent outfielder Alex Gordon, but there's growing concern around the team that Kansas City will be unable to hang in the bidding war for Gordon as deep-pocketed rivals drive his price up.
According to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star, it appears "realistic" right now that the Royals won't lock down either Gordon or free agent utility man Ben Zobrist:
KC still in contact w/ Gordon/Zobrist. Hopeful they can reel one in, realistic they may not as other teams show interest. Nothing close rn.

Kansas City has been connected to several outfield options both on the free agent and trade markets, including Gerardo Parra and Jackie Bradley Jr. The fact remains that both Ben Zobrist and Alex Gordon have expressed interest in remaining with the team, so there's still a chance that one could be willing to return on a relative home-field discount.
However, GM Dayton Moore isn't willing to leave his own team out to dry based on optimism that either Gordon or Zobrist will re-sign on the dotted line. Expect Kansas City to remain in the mix for several other outfield options until the situation with both is resolved in the coming weeks.
