The MLB trade deadline on August 1st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the Kansas City Royals starting to heat up. Plagued by injuries this year, the Royals are 48-49 and on the outside of the Wild Card race. The Royals lean toward selling, although that's not set in stone. With that in mind, here all the latest Royals trade rumors.
Will Royals Sell?
The Royals are on the outside looking in of Wild Card race, they are considering selling. They're expected to wait until after their homestand finished on Wednesday to make a final decision. Having lost four of their last five, the Royals are trending towards sellers. If that's the case, which players could they move?
Royals Want Red Sox' Clay Buchholz?
The Royals need starting pitching help, whether they buy or sell, and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports the Royals have interest in flipping Luke Hochevar for Clay Buchholz.
He’s likely available, considering he’s in his walk year and could bring a starter in return. The Royals have interest in Clay Buchholz, but the Red Sox would have to pick up a big chunk of the remaining contract, a prorated $13 million. The Sox could use another experienced reliever, and Hochevar has made 38 relief appearances this season with a 3.75 ERA. The Royals are expected to decide after their homestand which way they’re going to go.
Buchohlz has a team option for 2017, so could help the Royals next year as well. However, Buchholz has been awful this year and looks nothing like the pitcher who once threw a no-hitter. Hochevar is set to hit free agency this year, making him perhaps the most obvious trade chip for Kansas City.
Wade Davis Available?
Davis is near the top of any list involving best closers. With the Royals struggling, it's not a major surprise that teams have come calling about trying to trade for him. The Nationals are one such team, reports Jon Heyman. However, the Royals are asking for even more than the Yankees want for Aroldis Chapman. Davis is under team control through 2017, so unless the Royals get a staggering offer, it's tough to see them shipping out Davis.
Who Else Could Be Shopped?
In addition, soon-to-be free agents like Edinson Volquez and Kendrys Morales have bene mentioned as potential trade pieces by Ken Rosenthal. Heyman throws out the names Lorenzo Cain and Kelvin Herrara as other options. Especially with those last two players, expect the Royals to demand quite a bit in exchange. Of course, there's also the possibility the Royals remain mostly the same at the deadline, making only a few minor moves.
