Wolf wonders... what if Steve Spurrier hadn't spurned the Packers

Green Bay — When Steve Spurrier resigned earlier this week as football coach at South Carolina, Ron Wolf wondered anew what might have been.

Twice during his tenure as general manager in Green Bay, Wolf made it clear he would have hired Spurrier to coach the Packers.

Spurrier turned him down first in January 1999, when the job went to Ray Rhodes as the only candidate interviewed, and then 12 months later when Mike Sherman emerged from among several interviewees.

"Football lost an amazing coach today," Wolf said Tuesday. "He was so far ahead of everybody, it was unbelievable.
