Green Bay Packers Rumors: Matt Flynn won't be returning to Green Bay

After Matt Flynn was unceremoniously demoted to third-string and then dumped altogether by the Oakland Raiders, there were rumors floating around that the former Packers backup QB could return to Green Bay and reclaim his rightful throne (in this metaphor, the throne is a bench, and Flynn is holding a clipboard instead of a scepter. Anyway...).

We can confirm that the Packers have zero interest in bringing Flynn back for another stint as Aaron Rodgers' deputy. The Packers aren't exactly thrilled with their options if Rodgers goes down (the recently-acquired Seneca Wallace doesn't inspire a lot of confidence), but Flynn looked terrible in his short stint with the Raiders, and it isn't like Green Bay's depleted offensive line is going to protect him that much better than Oakland's did. Mike McCarthy described the Packers as "happy" with their QB situation during his Monday press conference, and confirmed that no moves are imminent.

"I feel very good about our quarterback room," McCarthy said. "As far as any roster moves and things like that, I really don't have any comment on, but I do like Seneca Wallace."

Flynn is the type of QB who needs time in the pocket to make his reads, and if he doesn't have that luxury...well, the seven sacks, lost fumble and interception he threw against Washington (Washington!) speak for themselves.

Packers fans no doubt remember Flynn for his six-touchdown, 480 yard performance against the Detroit Lions back in week 17 of 2011, but it looks like that'll go down as one of the weirder statistical anomalies in NFL history rather than the emergence of a great quarterback.

Packers management is quietly surveying the available options, but nothing we've heard out of Green Bay suggests Flynn is even on their radar. We heard a rumor a few weeks ago that they were in the hunt for a younger player that could develop for a while behind Rodgers, and it's still possible that they'll pursue that even with Wallace on board. Green Bay could also wait out the season with Wallace, then take a player in next year's loaded draft class (at least 14 QBs are coming out who project well at the NFL level).
