Dallas Cowboys quarterback Matt Cassel will be on a short leash Saturday night when the Cowboys host the New York Jets. If Cassel struggles early, sources indicate that former Boise State Broncos standout Kellen Moore will get the nod as his replacement.
The Cowboys remain on the outskirts of the NFC East race, two games behind the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. A win over an 8-5 Jets team would keep their fading playoff hopes alive heading into Sunday.
Cassel has struggled in his previous six starts for the Cowboys this year. If he can't get the offense clicking on Saturday, Moore will be tabbed as the fourth quarterback used by the team this season -- the first time since 2001 that Dallas has used that many quarterbacks in a season.
Moore took first-team snaps this week during practice.
If the Cowboys lose to the Jets, they will lose double-digit games for the first time since 2010. Such a fate seemed improbable prior to the season with Dallas coming off an NFC East championship.
After a brief two-game return to the starting lineup, regular starter Tony Romo was shut down after reinjuring his fractured collarbone against the Carolina Panthers.
