The last time the Dallas Cowboys won a Super Bowl was in 1996, when the Cowboys beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Super Bowl XXX. It was the third Super Bowl for the team since Jones bought the Cowboys in 1989. Twenty years after that Super Bowl XXX win, the Cowboys have yet to capture another title. Jones said Thursday he's surprised the team hasn't won another.
"Well, I saw how we got there for the first three that I was involved with," Jones told the Dallas Morning News at the Senior Bowl. "I'm the most surprised person in Mobile, or the country, that we haven't been back to and competed in a Super Bowl. But I know firsthand that you can go from the outhouse to the penthouse, and I've experienced it. Consequently, that fact has always driven me to know that it's just around the corner. There's a pony in here somewhere."
Jones has faith in both QB Tony Romo and head coach Jason Garrett to get the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl. Last season was expected to be a season in which the Cowboys contended for a Super Bowl, but injuries to Romo and terrible play from his backups resulted in the Cowboys picked No. 4 in this year's draft.
"I have all the confidence that you need to have in Jason," Jones said. "I really like our staff. We've seen this staff perform and have a good year in 2014. That's why I'm confident that if we get some stability at certainly some key positions on offense that we can have the team that we want to have."
Garrett hasn't been to the Super Bowl as Cowboys' head coach, but he has as a player. He wants to experience that feeling again and wants his players to experience it.
"It's a special feeling. I talk to our players about this all the time," Garrett said. "Those bonds that you created last for a lifetime. There is always a connection you have to guys who were a part of that. Those are special things to have in your life and you certainly want to cherish them and get back to having those again."
