The Dallas Cowboys are counting on several players to have breakout seasons in 2018 if they want to make it back to the playoffs. While not every young player or new addition will emerge as a star this year for the Cowboys, there are a few who are primed to have a breakout season. Here are three players the Cowboys need to step up this season:
1) Allen Hurns, WR
With Dez Bryant gone and Terrance Williams struggling to keep his name out of the headlines, Hurns may be the number one receiver for the Cowboys in 2018 - and they need him to be. Hurns caught 39 passes for 484 yards and a career-low two touchdowns last season. In his four years in Jacksonville, his best season was in 2015 when he had 64 receptions for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns. Dallas is counting on him returning to that 2015 form.
2) Rico Gathers, TE
Jason Witten is gone, which means the Cowboys will be looking for a tight end to fill his shoes. Gathers is 6-foot-6, weighs 285 pounds, and played basketball at Baylor. He played really well in two preseason games for the Cowboys in 2017, racking up 106 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns. Unfortunately Gathers suffered a concussion and was later placed on IR, ending his season. Will he deliver on that promise he showed in the preseason?
3) Byron Jones, CB
Dallas has some question marks along their defensive line and about their linebacker depth, but their biggest weakness going into 2018 appears to be their secondary. Jones is the most reliable member of that secondary and his versatility has allowed the Cowboys to move him from safety to cornerback this offseason. Second-year corners Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis are expected to take big leaps forward as well, but Jones is being counted on to be the No. 1 cornerback.
