The Dallas Cowboys were officially eliminated from playoff contention with a 19-16 loss to the Jets on Saturday night, dropping them to a dismal 4-10 on the season. The team has received a partial pass this year because of quarterback Tony Romo's two clavicle injuries, but that doesn't mean the Cowboys should lose 10 games in the manner they did.
There have been numerous issues with the team and Romo's injury isn't entirely to blame for the Cowboys' major problems on the field. They haven't produced the way their talent says they should under Garrett, and it's now looking like last season's success was an anomoly in his six-year tenure (Cowboys are 44-41 in that time). Here's why Garrett should be fired after this season:
3) Terrible Offense
Jason Garrett is an offensive coach; that's his area of expertise and where they Cowboys have been dominant. However, without Romo, the Cowboys offense has been anemic at best and a dumpster fire at worst. They've scored 12 points or less three times and have scored 20 points or less 10 times. Matt Cassel, Brandon Weeden, and Kellen Moore aren't great QBs, but Garrett needed to find a way to win with them at the helm - and he failed miserably in that regard.
2) Lack Of Control
The Cowboys are always a soap opera, and that wasn't any different this year. Dez Bryant is getting in arguments with reporters, something he's done more than once. There's Greg Hardy, who has acted like Marshawn Lynch with the media and got into arguments with the special teams coach. Joseph Randle stormed out of the team's facility after getting benched, and was released shortly thereafter.
All of these examples point to the same conclusion: Garrett simply doesn't have control of his team, which is recipe for the disaster we have seen this year. Until Garrett gets the Cowboys focused and under control, they are going to keep losing.
1) Blown Games
Quite frankly, the Cowboys have blown several games without Romo that could have them in first place in the NFC East. Dallas held fourth-quarter leads against the Buccaneers, Eagles, Seahawks, Giants, Saints, and Jets, but lost all of thos games. Instead of being in position to fight for the playoffs, the Cowboyshave one of the worst records in the league. While not all of those losses can be attributed to coaching gaffes down the stretch, Garrett's decision-making in clutch situations hasn't helped matters.
This season has been chalked up as a lost one for the Cowboys where everything that could've gone wrong did go wrong, but Garrett allowed for that to happen due to his deficiencies as a head coach. Dallas would be in better hands moving forward with someone else leading the way.
