The Kansas City Chiefs surprised the NFL world Friday, cutting WR Jeremy Maclin. The reliable WR battled injuries throughout 2016, but he's proven himself in the NFL. He's the most coveted player available on the free agent market and he can at least be the No. 2 WR on pretty much every team in the NFL. So, do the Dallas Cowboys have interest in adding Maclin?
Don't get your hopes up. Despite various articles pegging the Cowboys as a landing spot for Maclin, it actually doesn't make much sense for either side. Check out why below.
Cowboys Already Invested In Terrance Williams As The No. 2
Is Maclin an upgrade over Terrance Williams? Without a doubt. But the Cowboys won't be making that swap. If Williams was on his rookie contract still, adding Maclin could be an option. But Williams signed a four-year, $17 million deal this offseason. The Cowboys are paying him to be their No. 2 WR and with $9.5 million in dead money for this year, they can't cut him (it would cost more to cut him than to roster him). The Cowboys aren't willing to pay Williams that much to serve as the No. 4 WR, so it doesn't make sense to add a replacement who could very well make more than him this year. Besides, it's not like Dallas lacks depth at WR.
Dallas Has Enough WRs Already
Dallas really doesn't need to add another WR right now. Dez is the obvious No. 1, with Cole Beasley coming off an amazing year in the slot. The inconsistent Williams has the No. 2 spot and fourth-round rookie Ryan Switzer is a lock to make the roster. There's actually a pending roster battle between Brice Butler and several young players, like Andy Jones and rookie Noah Brown, for the fifth spot. With all those players on the roster, Maclin is a luxury and one they shouldn't (and won't) invest in.
Dallas Has Limited Capital To Spend
Yes, the Cowboys just got $14 million in cap space coming via Tony Romo's Post-June 1st release, but that doesn't mean they need to go spend it all right now. OG Zack Martin is due for a big contract extension soon and he's not going to be the only one. The Cowboys will need to keep cap space free for their young core and use some to add more defensive help next year. Remember, teams can roll over unused cap space. NFL teams can't afford to invest big money in every position (look at Seattle's offensive line), so they have to make smart decisions with their limited capital. After giving Williams a new contract and spending fourth and seventh round picks on WRs, that means adding Maclin isn't a good investment. He'll command a notable salary this offseason, even at this point in the offseason, and the Cowboys aren't going to give him what he can get elsewhere.
It'd be great for the Cowboys to have him on their roster, but it's not the right move and this isn't Madden 18. Maclin is already talking with the Bills, so don't expect the Cowboys to show any interest in Maclin this offseason.
