The Dallas Cowboys will hold a private workout with Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch in Orlando on Wednesday, head coach Jason Garrett announced.
Lynch is the second quarterback the team has worked out (Dak Prescott), and Garrett said they also plan to hold private workouts with Carson Wentz and Jared Goff.
“You’re trying to find out who they are and certainly you want to find out who they are as players,” Garrett said. “There’s a lot of different ways to do that. You see them in a combine setting. You watch their tape. But if you get a chance to go be closer to them and get your hands on them to do some specific things you would ask a player to do, I think that gives you a better chance to evaluate the guy. You always want to find out who the guy is as a person. That’s a really important thing to us, their personal character, their football character. I think the more exposure you have to him, I think the better chances you have to make the proper evaluation of the guy. So when you’re picking at four, you can target the pool maybe a little bit more than if you’re picking at 26, 27, 28 or wherever we picked last year.”
The Cowboys are looking to draft someone to back up starter Tony Romo, hoping they can become the quarterback of the future and take over when Romo retires.
There's a chance they could target a quarterback with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, shown by them working out Wentz and Goff, who are widely regarded as the top two QB prospects in the draft.
However, Dallas is expected to draft a defensive player in the first round, and this workout with Lynch shows their interest in drafting him with their second round pick. Lynch is considered to be a late first- or early second-round pick. He passed for 3,776 yards, 28 touchdowns, and four interceptions last season while leading Memphis to a 9-4 record.
