The Dallas Cowboys don't have a lot of depth at the tight end position behind Jason Witten, and with the 35-year-old's career figuring to come to an end sooner rather than later, it's an area the Cowboys need to address.
With injuries to a pair of backups, the Cowboys are expected to add another tight end before training camp. Could they gamble on Ladarius Green?
The Steelers released Green this week after just one year with the team, and concussion and ankle issues limited him to just six games. Carl Daley of FanSided breaks down Green's potential fit with Dallas - and why the Cowboys should be interested in him:
Both James Hanna (knee) and Geoff Swaim (foot, pectoral) are dealing with injury issues that will likely have them both out until training camp. Or possibly longer.
Former basketball player Rico Gathers has made significant strides this offseason and seemingly has become the favorite to play a big role in this offense. The main issue is his lack of experience. Gathers has barely played pro football and that could set him back a bit in terms of his productivity on the field again this season.
A veteran Green could come in and immediately contribute if he is cleared medically. And if the Cowboys can bring in the five-year veteran on the cheap, he could end up being a terrific addition to this offense.
In such a deep tight end class, the Cowboys outright ignored the position during the 2017 NFL Draft last month. Signing a player like Ladarius Green could be their opportunity to add some quality depth.
Green caught 18 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown last season. In 2015 with the Chargers, he set career highs with 37 catches for 429 yards and four touchdowns while backing up Antonio Gates.
