The Dallas Cowboys elected to enter the preseason with Kellen Moore as their No. 2 QB behind Dak Prescott. After two poor preseason efforts, the Cowboys are now concerned about entering the regular season with Moore as the backup.
Moore had a solid Hall of Fame game, but in matchups against the Rams and Colts, Moore had major issues. In those two games, Moore is just 18 of 38 (47 percent) for 200 yards and a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Cowboys will now discuss Moore's future.
"Considering the largely unproven Moore has been given the backup job behind starter Dak Prescott it is a cause for concern — enough for a source to say that he will be the subject of conversation at personnel meetings this week," Hill reports. "What that means is largely unknown. It’s unlikely the Cowboys will go into the season with undrafted rookie Cooper Rush as the backup, no matter how impressive he has been. And the team has so far refused to consider adding a proven veteran free agent to vie with Moore for the backup job."
Rush, mentioned by Hill, has thrived in the preseason as an undrafted rookie. Working against mostly the third string or lower, Rush has easily been the most impressive backup QB. In his last two games (after an average-at-best Hall of Fame Game), Rush has completed 17 of 20 passes for 196 yards and 3 TDs. But those numbers are a massive upgrade over what Rush did at Central Michigan and there's the chance Rush is more of a flash-in-the-pan.
The other QB on the roster is Luke McCown, who was signed after Zac Dysert was injured. McCown isn't a viable backup QB option either. If the Cowboys turn to the free agent market, former starters Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III remained unsigned.
