The Dallas Cowboys are out of the playoff race after an awful effort against the Seattle Seahawks and that's led to calls to fire head coach Jason Garrett and the rest of the coaching staff. Owner Jerry Jones has said he won't fire Garrett, but was less committed to the futures of the rest of the coaching staff. Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan is the most likely to be fired, because of questionable schemes, play calls and Dak Prescott's struggles.
Linehan has yet to be fired and might keep his job, but there are other coaches the Cowboys could look into hiring. Potential options like Greg Roman, Norv Turner, Mike McCoy, Bill Callahan and more considered, but didn't make the Top 5. With that in mind, the Cowboys' top 5 offensive coordinator candidates to replace Scott Linehan are listed below.
The video below is from the Cowboys Report, where the list first appeared. A short write-up for each candidate is included below the video as well.
5. Tony Romo, CBS Broadcaster
Some Cowboys fans would love to land Romo as the OC, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. Romo has a great job at CBS and he also has zero coaching experience.
4. Rob Chudzinski, Colts OC
Most current OCs won't be available or want to make a lateral move, but Chudzinski is an exception. He's a solid OC, as he's shown in other stops. But the Colts are awful this year because of injuries are issues that aren't Chudzinski's fault. So he'll likely be a free agent, meaning the Cowboys can chase him.
3. Alex Van Pelt, Packers QBs Coach
Aaron Rodgers speaks highly of his QB coach, which should carry weight with other teams. He does have limited OC experience and could be a good option to help develop Prescott.
2. Gary Kubiak, Broncos Executive
Kubiak retired before taking a job in the Broncos front office. However, he's expressed interest in returning to the coaching world as an OC. The Cowboys would be a great fit for Kubiak, although they would have to sell him on returning to the coaching world. If they can get Kubiak, it'd be a great hire.
1. John DeFilippo, Eagles QBs Coach
DeFilippo will be the top offensive coordinator target this offseason and there's a real chance he gets hired as a head coach. His contract is up, so he could bolt if the Eagles can't promote him to OC if/when Frank Reich gets a head coaching job. DeFilippo is my top target for the Cowboys OC position, if it opens up.
