Offensive guard Zack Martin has been a staple of the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line since they drafted him in the first round in 2014, and they're hoping to keep him around for a long time.
The team has already picked up his option for the 2018 season, but vice president Stephen Jones has said the team’s top priority is signing Martin to a long-term extension that could be for as many as eight years.
For his part, Martin has said that he wants to remain with the Cowboys, but is more focused on winning than his next contract.
“People ask [about his future] a lot, but we’re getting close to the season now and it’s getting serious where we’ve got to sit down and talk about just winning games,” Martin said, via ESPN's Todd Archer. “That’s what I’m focusing on right now, and if anything else happens, it will take care of itself.
“I love being a Cowboy, but I’m going to let my agents and them handle that, and if the time comes, they’ll tell me when it’s the right time to do something.”
Last year, Dallas signed center Travis Frederick to a six-year extension. In 2014, Dallas gave left tackle Tyron Smith a six-year extension. Martin's next deal figures to be somewhere in that range.
Martin has played in and started every game in the past three years.
