The Dallas Cowboys lost their second game of the season on Sunday, falling 10-7 to the New York Giants, with the offense getting most of the blame for the loss. Some brought up the possibility of Tony Romo replacing rookie Dak Prescott as the team's starting quarterback following the game, but both head coach Jason Garrett and owner Jerry Jones shot down that notion.
"You can make it as simple or as complex as you want to make it," Garrett said. "It's pretty simple for us: Dak's going to play quarterback as we go forward.
"We're just focused on Dak playing quarterback for us, and we'll continue to do that in our preparation this week and as we go forward He's done a really good job for us up to this point, won 11 of 13 games that he's started, and he's handled really every situation as well as you can handle it. So we'll just continue that way. Tony will be in a backup role for us and he'll be ready to go if he's called upon to play. But Dak's done an outstanding job up to this point. [I'm] excited to see him continue to play."
Garrett also said that he never contemplated pulling Prescott for Romo at any point during the loss. Prescott completed 17/37 passes for 165 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the game, marking the third straight game in which he has passed for less than 200 yards. However, Jones said he has not lost confidence in Prescott.
"He's got 13 NFL ballgames at a high level under his belt, and what's he got, four interceptions now? Four? So, four interceptions. I feel good about our quarterback, and I like where we are at the quarterback position," he said. "We should have asked and wanted him to make the drive that might have won this thing for us tonight. I don't want to make excuses. Most of what happened to us tonight was a well-coached New York Giants defense.
"I think we've seen Dak have bad series and seen him have what I'd call challenging series, and we've seen him come back and right the ship. Certainly, we have no expectation that we won't come back. I'd rather have had the chance to get better with us winning it, but we're not going to take where we are right now and let this do anything but improve us."
Prescott took over as the full-time starter after Romo suffered a back injury in the preseason, and Romo has been the backup since returning. Prescott has thrown for 3,139 yards with 20 touchdowns and four interceptions 218 rushing yards and five more touchdowns on the ground this season.
