The Dallas Cowboys have been expected to focus almost solely on defensive players early in the NFL Draft. While they are virtually guaranteed to use their first-round pick on either a defensive end or a cornerback, Dane Brugler of CBS Sports reports they could add some offensive firepower in the second and third rounds.
Don't get me wrong, it is certainly possible that the Cowboys go defense heavy in the first three rounds – they need it. But Dallas brought in a few offensive prospects the last few weeks that they will consider on Day 2 of the draft.
At pick No. 28, the Cowboys are locked in on defense. But at 60 or 92 (or if the Cowboys trade back), keep running back Curtis Samuel (Ohio State) and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (USC) on the radar. Both were top-30 visits for Dallas (the only two offensive players among the 30) and are expected to come off the board at some point on Day 2.
The Cowboys don't have an immediate need for an offensive skill player, but the front office will be wisely looking to help the franchise's young quarterback.
Samuel is a versatile running back/wide receiver, and may end up being best used in a Percy Harvin-type role in the NFL. He had 97 carries for 771 yards and eight touchdowns last season while catching 74 passes for 865 yards and seven more scores.
Smith-Schuster was projected to be a first-round pick at one point in his college career, but saw his stock drop over the course of the past year. He had 70 catches for 914 yards and 10 touchdowns this past season.
