The Dallas Cowboys stopped DE Randy Gregory's draft day slide in 2014, and were rewarded with Gregory getting a four-game suspension from the NFL for failing drug tests. Gregory has received plenty of criticism since the failed test was revealed, but the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones are sticking with Gregory.
"As we all understand in rehabilitation and dealing with these kinds of issues, there’s no assurances of anything,” Jones told ESPN. "Anybody that has ever been involved in rehabilitation and addressing any type of dependency will tell you that’s quite a challenge to not only the individual that’s having to deal with it, but his supporting cast, his family, his teammates in this particular case. Again, just want to do what we can do. He has great support but he also has really serious expectations from his teammates as well as anybody, as far as I’m concerned, with the Dallas Cowboys. We depend on him and we want him to do right."
In fact, the Cowboys and Jones think Gregory will become the player they think he can be.
"He’s got gifts," Jones said. “He understands he has gifts, God’s gifts. He’s got great human skills, personality. He is nothing short of brilliant and he certainly has his demons. I know that lack of understanding where he is is not one of them. We pray for him and want him to have the kind of career that his gifts would allow him to have, which is an exceptional football player. Probably was the top rusher in the last two drafts. That’s just my opinion. We need him. Want to get him right."
Gregory failed to record a sack last season, as he was limited by injuries. But he showed promise at times and recorded eight hurries, the third most on the team.
