The Dallas Cowboys have all but guaranteed that they will pick a defensive player in the first round of the NFL Draft, with them specifically targeting defensive ends and pass rushers to upgrade their defensive line.
Michigan's Taco Charlton, Tennessee's Derek Barnett and Missouri's Charles Harris are their top targets at this point, but Houston defensive end/outside linebacker Tyus Bowser is also in the mix, according to Dane Brugler of CBS Sports.
The Cowboys did work Bowser out recently and I've been told there has been plenty of late interest from Dallas, specifically from the coaching staff. At 6-foot-3 and 247 pounds, Bowser is a top-tier athlete with pop in his hands and natural bend to capture the corner as a pass rusher. With that said, he is still very raw both mentally and technically and might be more of a nickel rusher as a rookie than high volume defender.
My guess? Bowser won't be option A for the Cowboys at No. 28, but depending on who has been drafted at that point (T.J. Watt, Charles Harris, etc.), he might be the next best player on their board.
Harris' draft stock is reportedly rising quickly, so there is a good chance that the three other players mentioned above won't be available when the Cowboys are up with the No. 28 overall selection.
Bowser is currently projected to be a late first round or early second round pick. He had 47 tackles with 12 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in just eight games last season. Here are his highlights from Houston:
