It has been 27 years now since the Dallas Cowboys last won the Super Bowl. Unfortunately for America’s Team, there have been few occasions in that period where the NFC East side have looked like they could go all the way.
The Cowboys were beaten in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs last season. After winning the NFC East with a 12-5 record, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers 23-17. It was a disappointing end to the campaign for Mike McCarthy’s side.
McCarthy and his staff are now focused on the season ahead in 2022. They are 14/1 in the sports betting online to win the Super Bowl. Those odds suggest they will be in the mix with many of the leading teams for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Dallas have made two signings in the off-season, which they hope will improve their roster. Wide receiver James Washington signs on a one-year deal from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has been a regular starter in the league since he made his debut in 2018.
The Cowboys have also acquired Dante Fowler Jr from the Atlanta Falcons. The defensive end is a former first-round pick. He has recorded 35 sacks in the league and has a wealth of experience, which should help Dallas defensively.
Loss of Cooper Will Hurt Offense
Since being traded to Dallas midway through the 2018 season, Amari Cooper has scored 29 receiving touchdowns. He has been the team’s leading receiver throughout that period, often coming up with a big play when it matters.
The loss of Cooper, who was traded to the Cleveland Browns, is sure to be felt next season. He was quarterback Dak Prescott’s go-to man, even when he had double coverage around him. The Cowboys’ offense are going to need to show they can remain a big force without their number 19.
Dallas have also parted ways with Cedrick Wilson Jr. The WR has moved to the Miami Dolphins. The good news for Cowboys fans is that Michael Gallup has signed a new five-year deal with the franchise. He missed large parts of last season through injury, so he is going to be a big boost to the team when he returns.
Dak and Zeke Remain the Team’s Biggest Strength
Just like when they were the number one seed in the NFC Conference in 2016, Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott remain a big part of their team’s offence. The QB-RB duo will be relied upon in 2022 to lead the team to success.
Prescott had an excellent season in 2021 on his return to the league, following a serious injury. He recorded a career-high 37 passing touchdowns through the regular season, and he also ended with his best completion rate at 68.8.
Elliott improved on what he produced in 2020, with his third-best season in the NFL. He finished last year with 10 rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns. If he can build upon that in the new campaign, the Cowboys will be a strong dual-threat team.
The NFC East champions will be expected to win their division again in 2022. Beyond that, they will need to produce their best football when it matters in the playoffs, otherwise they may miss out on the Super Bowl once again.
