The news that Sean Lee is expected to miss the next three to four weeks with a hamstring injury is terrible news for the Dallas Cowboys.
Lee will likely miss the Giants and Raiders games, and might be back for the Bears game.
Aside from Tony Romo, there might not be a more important player to the Dallas Cowboys. Lee has 93 total tackles and four picks for the Cowboys, both of which led the team. He’s third in the NFL in tackles and interceptions.
The defense isn’t nearly as good without Lee. He’s the quarterback of the defense and one of the best linebackers in the NFL. His biggest flaw isn’t his skill, but inability to stay healthy. He’s yet to play in all 16 games during his time in the NFL.
Dallas could not stop the Saints and Drew Brees from exploiting the middle of the field once Lee left the game. Without Lee, Dallas’ defense was doomed, just like last year.
Kyle Bosworth is listed as the back up for Lee at middle linebacker. Bosworth has been a nice addition on special teams, but he’s not the guy you want starting at middle linebacker on a team trying to make a playoff push. Justin Durant could play some MLB, but he left the Saints game with a hamstring injury and is expected to miss three or four weeks as well.
Dallas might want to look into signing a linebacker, if not to start, then at least for depth. Hey, Bradie James is a free agent.
Injuries have decimated the Cowboys defense. DeMarcus Ware doesn’t look like his usual self. Anthony Spencer is out for the year. Jason Hatcher has missed time with a neck injury. Jay Ratliff never played for the ‘Boys before getting cut. Morris Claiborne is out with a hamstring injury. J.J. Wilcox is out with a knee injury. Danny McCray and Barry Church aren’t 100 percent.
The loss of Lee is just rubbing salt in the wounds.
