The popularity of fantasy football has never been higher. I love fantasy football so much that am in five different leagues this season and have invested more money than I’d like to admit. I also fancy myself an expert. So here are the Cowboys that will have a fantasy impact this week and what to expect of them.
Tony Romo, QB
Anyone who thinks Romo isn’t a good fantasy quarterback either doesn’t pay attention or just really hates him. Since Romo became a full-time starter, he has been a top-7 fantasy quarterback every year, except for the two seasons in which he missed at least three games. Expect much of the same this season. The Cowboys-Giants matchups are traditionally high scoring affairs (both teams have averaged over 25 points since 2009,) so feel confident starting him if you passed on the elite fantasy quarterbacks.
DeMarco Murray, RB
Murray is probably a top-20 running back this week, but if you’re relying on him to be anything more than a flex player, your team is probably going to be in trouble. Not because Murray isn’t talented, but because he is always hurt and Dallas struggles to run the ball. Murray could go off for 15 points this week, or struggle for four. Play him with caution.
Dez Bryant, WR
If you have Bryant, you should play him every single week. I am extremely high on him this season and think he is going to have a monster year. He is an obvious starter and has potential to be one of the best fantasy wide outs each week. Feel incredibly confident starting him.
Miles Austin, WR
With the emergence of Bryant and the reliability of Witten, Austin has been relegated to Romo’s third target. That’s hurt his fantasy stock. Austin probably won’t be anything more than a flex player throughout the season. If he can stay healthy, he could have a few starter-like quality performances. This week, he’s a top-35 wide receiver, which means he shouldn’t be started as anything more than a desperation flex player.
Jason Witten, TE
Since Romo became the Cowboys’ starter, Witten has yet to finish outside the top-8 in fantasy points for a tight end. Not surprisingly, his worst season was the year Romo broke his collarbone. Witten is projected to only get five points against the Giants on ESPN, but he should to do far better than that, given Dallas’ penchant for using him over the middle of the field against the Giants. It is unlikely he will repeat the 18 catch, 167-yard performance he had in their second match up last season, but he is a top-5 fantasy tight end this week.
Dallas Defense
As I mentioned earlier, the Giants-Cowboys games are typically high scoring. Which means it’s best to simply not play the Cowboys Defense. There are plenty of better options out there this week.
Dan Bailey, K
Since the Cowboys-Giants games are usually high scoring, starting Bailey should be a solid play. Predicting games for kickers is incredibly difficult, but Bailey should be a top-8 kicker this week.
