The Dallas Cowboys have handed out huge contracts before, only to see the terms of those deals blow up in their faces. Do they fear a similar fate with handing WR Dez Bryant a long-term deal?
Asked if the Cowboys had a chance to get RB DeMarco Murray and LB Rolando McClain under contract while still having the money to secure Bryant, ESPN's Todd Archer indicated that they will likely use the franchise tag on Bryant next season and assess their options:
Yes, they will have the chance to keep those guys and use the franchise tag on Dez Bryant. By the way, I believe, as of right now, the chances are better that Bryant plays next year on the franchise tag than on a new long-term contract. The Cowboys will have to spend wisely. Maybe I'm naive, but I think this team has learned from its mistakes of the past when dishing out huge contracts. They might have to go over budget a little bit to keep DeMarco Murray because of what he is doing, but I don't think they will break the budget. The same goes with Rolando McClain.
Granted, if Bryant dominates and helps lead the Cowboys deep into the playoffs, a long-term contract might not be far behind.
However, as of right now, the word is franchise tag first and contract worries later.
