We’re in the beginning stages of the Cleveland Cavaliers' offseason preparations, and there are plenty of plots and subplots to follow during July’s free agent push. The Cavs are looking to add some pieces to strengthen their team, but signing the wrong player or two could send them in the wrong direction. Here are three free agents they should avoid:
Mo Williams
Williams is interested in returning to Cleveland and there appears to be mutual interest from the Cavs, but a reunion would not be good for them. He would split time in a backup point guard role with Matthew Dellavedova, and wouldn't see a lot of time at shooting guard with J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert on the roster. Williams is a guy who is at his best with the ball in his hands, and he wouldn't get to touch it much in Cleveland.
Tayshaun Prince
Cleveland reached out to Tayshaun Prince at the start of free agency, targeting him as someone who can give the Cavs more wing depth. The Cavaliers are hoping to pitch the 35-year-old on the idea of playing for a contender as his career winds down, though Prince has been quiet about his plans. However, the Cavs already have plenty of aging vets with limited athleticism, and Prince likely wouldn't see much playing time.
J.J. Barea
Barea is another backup point guard the Cavs are looking at, but he also needs the ball in his hands a ton. Add in the fact that he's one of the smallest players in the league, and there simply wouldn't be enough room for him to have the kind of impact you'd be paying him to have.
