LeBron had opted out to become a free agent, but he was always expected to re-sign with the Cavs. He is now making around $1.3 million more this year than if he would've opted in for another year on his previous contract.
He is also expected to opt out next year and re-sign with Cleveland again, but will receive substantially more money because of the salary cap explosion that is expected in 2016.
James had been waiting to re-sign until the Cavs were able to re-sign Trsitan Thompson, and while Thompson has yet to officially sign, this move from LeBron seems to indicate that a deal for the young big man is coming soon.
