Some interesting developments have taken place in the Cleveland Cavs coaching search over the past 24 hours, with one legendary coaching name fully throwing his name into the hat as a candidate to replace former head coach Mike Brown. Who is it? Keep reading as Chat Sports presents to you the Top 5 Cleveland Cavs Head Coaching Candidates As Of May 15th:
5. Mike D'Antoni
D'Antoni's name has been quietly whispered as a potential candidate in Cleveland -- but it may take a couple of years before the once-coveted offensive mastermind rehabs his image from a humbling tenure as Los Angeles Lakers head coach. D'Antoni's hire would be a puzzling one for a club that rededicated itself to the defensive side of the court in 2013. However, he still lurks in the periphery as a possibility if other options go for naught.
4. Vinny Del Negro
Speaking of former Los Angeles head coaches with spotty reputations for poor game-planning -- it's Vinny Del Negro! Del Negro seemed to be getting it right in the last regular season of his tenure with the Clippers, leading the team to a 56-26 record in 2012-13. However, a six-game exit at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the 2013 NBA Playoffs sealed his fate. Is he ready to start from scratch in Cleveland? Is Cleveland willing to take a chance on him?
3. John Calipari
Remember when Rex Chapman said that John Calipari-to-the-Lakers was a "done deal?" Doesn't that feel like ages ago? Now, sources are indicating that the Cleveland Cavs are interested in the polarizing Kentucky Wildcats head coach. This is not the first time that the Cavs have expressed interest in Calipari -- as they also put out feelers in their attempts to retain LeBron James back in 2010 (James and Calipari are close.) If the Cavs really want Calipari, it's going to take a full-court press on the Cavs' part to convince him to relinquish his throne in Lexington.
2. Alvin Gentry
Gentry would make perfect sense for the Cleveland Cavs on many levels. He has ties to general manager David Griffin from their time with the Phoenix Suns. His reputation as the ultimate players' coach would be welcomed with open arms by the youth-laden Cavs roster. He also received a raw deal in his exit as Phoenix Suns head coach, and would most likely come back with a new fire for the coaching profession which could be a huge add to a Cleveland Cavs in need of a jolt.
1. George Karl
Well, we have a new favorite. Per Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio, George Karl "really wants [the] Cavs' coaching job." The Cleveland Cavs would be foolish not to listen to this, especially with Karl's twenty-one season streak of posting a .500-or-better regular-season record as a coach. George Karl's NBA head coaching career started in Cleveland. Wouldn't it be fitting for it to end triumphantly where it all began?
