According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the Cleveland Cavaliers have narrowed their coaching search down to two candidates - Los Angeles Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue and European coaching legend David Blatt.
Filed to ESPN: Cavs believed to be deciding between Tyronn Lue and David Blatt for head coach. Choice expected soon.
— Brian Windhorst (@WindhorstESPN) June 19, 2014
Blatt, an American-born Israeli legend, spent the last two decades coaching in Europe, and he most recently won the Euroleague competition with underdogs Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Cavaliers have spent a great deal of time this past week looking into Blatt's background, and they've supposedly been very impressed with what they've heard from colleagues and former players.
Lue is definitely the underdog here - without any previous head coaching experience, he'd be seen as a much higher-risk option. As a player, he was a journeyman - over an eleven-year NBA career, Lue played for seven teams. He won two NBA Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and 2001, and since retirement has coached for the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers. Lue has been tabbed as a future NBA head coach, but few expected him to transition to a head coaching role this soon.
