The Chicago Cubs are viewed by many to be a major player for Toronto Blue Jays lefty ace David Price once free agency officially begins on Saturday. In fact, the way things look right now, they're the prohibitive favorite until proven otherwise.
"Two agents for free-agent starting pitchers predict that Price will sign with the Cubs," FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal wrote in an article published on Friday. An executive who knows Price says that the Cubs are his first choice."
Rosenthal added that the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox are other potential destinations if things don't come together between Price and the Cubs.
While Price was the subject of criticism once again for his inconsistency during the Toronto Blue Jays' run to an ALCS appearance, he's still an in-his-prime lefty who consistently ranks near the top of the charts in almost every conceivable category for MLB starters. Those types of arms are rare in general, even more so as unrestricted free agents.
Price went 18-5 during the 2015 regular season with a 2.45 ERA and 225/47 K/BB ratio over 32 starts with the Detroit Tigers and Blue Jays. His ERA was a tidy 2.30 with Toronto over 11 starts in the regular season, but ballooned to 6.17 in four appearances (3 starts) in the playoffs.
