Maddon opted out of the last year of his contract with Tampa Bay after the season ended, and the Cubs immediately went after him. Chicago fired their manager Rick Renteria on Friday to make room for Maddon.
The Cubs have had five consecutive losing seasons and have not won a playoff game since 2003, while Maddon guided the Rays to the franchise's lone World Series berth in 2008.
