The MLB trade deadline of August 1st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the Boston Red Sox are starting to heat up. Boston is 54-41, but still 1.5 games back of the AL East lead. They've already landed starter Drew Pomeranz from the Padres, but might not be done yet. With that in mind, here all the latest Red Sox trade rumors.
Royals Want Red Sox' Clay Buchholz?
The Red Sox are looking for some bullpen help and and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports the Royals have interest in flipping Luke Hochevar for Clay Buchholz.
He’s likely available, considering he’s in his walk year and could bring a starter in return. The Royals have interest in Clay Buchholz, but the Red Sox would have to pick up a big chunk of the remaining contract, a prorated $13 million. The Sox could use another experienced reliever, and Hochevar has made 38 relief appearances this season with a 3.75 ERA. The Royals are expected to decide after their homestand which way they’re going to go.
Buchohlz has a team option for 2017, so could help the Royals next year as well. The Red Sox are a bit thin in the pen right now, especially with Craig Kimbrel and Koji Uehara on the DL.
Boston Called About Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Others
The Red Sox have already landed Pomeranz, but might not be done looking for starting pitching help, according to Jon Heyman. The Red Sox have checked in on Sale and Quintana, and could also have interest in closer David Robertson. The White Sox are open to deal many of their players, although Sale and Quintana would require a large package. Sale was suspended for channeling his inner Edward Scissorhands on the White Sox's jerseys, and it's unclear how that will affect his trade value. The Red Sox have the payroll and prospects to afford either starter and/or Robertson.
