In today's look into Celtics rumors and news, Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo is seeking nine figures when it comes to a potential contract extension to remain with the Celtics.
Speaking with Yahoo! Sports Radio (via Ben Rohrbach of WEEI.com), radio analyst Cedric Maxwell believes this means the end of Rondo's time in New England.
“I think it basically gives you an indicator of what the Celtics want to do,” Maxwell stated, via Rohrbach's article on Monday. “Rumor has it that Rondo has asked for a $100 million extension. You’ve got Smart, the young kid, and you’ve got Young, the other kid from Kentucky — both guards. And in the NBA system right now, the way they’re being paid, you would pay both those guys probably about $4 million for one year instead of the $100 million right now that Rondo wanted to ask for."
“So, if you’re Rondo, you might want to start calling that moving company and say, ‘Eh, come get my stuff. I don’t think I’m going to be here too long," Maxwell added.
While Maxwell is right when it comes to Smart and Young commanding $4.1 million, the Celtics aren't able to sign Rondo to a $100 million extension this summer. The most they can offer him, per Rohrbach, is three years and $44.8 million. Rondo can't pick up a five-year, $104.7 million max extension from the team until he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2015.
