The Boston Celtics are going through a big rebuilding process, but even after trading away Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green, they've clinched a playoff spot. With two first round picks in this year's NBA Draft and a bunch of cap space, Boston's future looks bright - and it could be even brighter if they can bring a quality free agent or two into the mix. Here are their top targets this offseason:
DeAndre Jordan, C, Los Angeles Clippers
Jordan enjoys playing for the Clippers, but they might not be willing to offer him the money that's necessary to keep him in Los Angeles. Boston has the cap space to give him close to max deal if they so choose, and while that may seem like an overpay, Jordan would greatly improve this team. He's an elite rebounder and shot-blocker, automatically giving the Celtics the defensive punch down low they desperately need. A more prominent role would be very appealing to Jordan, and Boston can offer him that.
Wesley Matthews, SG, Portland Trail Blazers
Matthews is one of the best two-way shooting guards in the league and is due for a big pay day. He's another guy who will demand a little less than the max (especially after he suffered a torn ACL this season), but for the Celtics, he could be worth every penny of it. Matthews led the NBA in three-pointers made before he got hurt, giving the Celtics a premier threat from the outside. His defensive prowess, coupled with Marcus Smart or Avery Bradley on the court, would make Boston one of the best perimeter defending teams in the league.
An added bonus would be his size. Boston was one of the smaller perimeter teams with Rajon Rondo (6'1") and Avery Bradley (6'2") starting in the backcourt, but with Matthews (6'5", 220 lbs.) and Marcus Smart (6'4", 220 lbs.), they become one of the bigger units.
Robin Lopez, C, Portland Trail Blazers
Boston's two starting big men - Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk - are good offensive players but aren't great on the defensive end. Enter Lopez, another Trail Blazer who's a true seven-footer and a hard-nosed defender that doesn't expect any plays to be called for him on the offensive end. Boston would gladly give some money to a guy who's a proven commodity in the league and a great locker room guy - something this young team needs.
