The Boston Celtics are in an interesting position with stalwart guard Rajon Rondo, with divided schools of thought prevailing on whether the team should trade him, let him walk via free agency next July, or make a concerted push to re-sign him as a foundation going forward.
Per Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald, one league scout believes the time is now for the team to part ways with Rondo and focus on the youth movement they've started via the NBA Draft.
“I think they’ve got to get rid of Rondo because they drafted a good, young point guard,” the scout said, via Murphy's article on Sunday. “Marcus Smart is a franchise-type point guard or can be, I think, who needs to play to be good. He’s fast and he defends. And you don’t say that about rookies.”
Smart is a tough-nosed, defensive revelation that could very well develop into one of the premier guards in the league. However, it is unclear at this moment whether or not Danny Ainge is willing to part with a known commodity in order to go all-in on Smart when he's still so young.
