Some NBA analysts came out and handed the Boston Celtics the equivalent of a moral victory after they took the Cleveland Cavs to the limit in a 122-121 shootout at TD Garden on Friday.
Head coach Brad Stevens isn't having any of that.
“One point not good enough,” Stevens said in reflection on the Cavs loss, via Brian Robb of CBS Boston. “It is what it is. There’s no moral victories, we can’t talk about learning. We’ve got to just get better. We’ve got to do it. And I think that that’s where we all are. We can’t get frustrated with it, we can’t lose sight of the fact that we’re eight games in and not 70 games in, but the good news is there is a belief growing, but it’s got to be rounded out.”
To summarize, Stevens is doing his best to instill a confidence in this Celtics team that will have them expecting to win every time out, regardless of the assumed talent level of the team's opponent.
It's a refreshing way of viewing things in a league where tanking is the norm and blowouts are becoming a regular fixture of the nightly NBA schedule.
