Brad Stevens is young, but he’s already showing he knows how to handle the responsibility of running a legendary team like the Boston Celtics. Stevens is making all the right moves so far, and he received additional plaudits for reaching out to dozens of former Celtics players by sending them letters asking for their support.
During the press conference when he was formally introduced, Stevens humbly acknowledged the tradition of the franchise. Stevens also went to Louisville in order to meet up with Rajon Rondo, the team’s star point guard.
In a unique gesture, the new coach sent letters to former Celtics players encouraging each one to attend Celtics practices games so they can stay in touch and remain a valuable part of the franchise.
Here’s a snippet of the letter that Stevens sent:
"On behalf of the Boston Celtics management, staff and players, I write you to come around any time. Please know that you are cordially welcome to attend our practice sessions, home games at the TD Garden, games when we are on the road and Celtics events in our community.”
It’s unclear how many former players received Stevens’ letters, or responded to them. The gesture alone sends a message that the Celtics are in good hands with Stevens, and although a rebuilding process is inevitable, the future is bright.
Stevens is the 17th head coach in the history of the Celtics franchise.
