Just days after signing the Brad Marchand to a four year contract extension, the Bruins announced that they had come to terms with Tyler Seguin on a six year contract worth $34.5M that carries a $5.75M cap hit. Seguin is coming off what I guess you could call a breakout season in which he led the Bruins in scoring with 29 goals and 38 assists for 67 points in 81 games.
Fan girls around Boston are currently rejoicing in the streets. If fans don't get a hold of them soon, it could turn into the Vancouver riots. Cars will be tipped over and burned, stores will be broken into and looted, buildings everywhere will be raging with fire and all the while you'll hear the constant squealing of teenage girls living in a fantasy land.
On the bright side, this deal locks up Seguin, the future franchise forward, until 2019, just one year away from unrestricted free agency. That's where the Bruins did it right. Buying out most of Seguin restricted years avoids any and all contractual issues that many teams face with restricted free agents. It also ensures that the Bruins will still have control over him when the contract expires, enabling them to work out a new contract with Seguin if they wish to.
If I had to guess, Seguin's reaction to the new deal being official looks something like this.
My feelings on the new deal?
That pretty much sums it up.
